Apple is celebrating Accessibility Awareness Day with a week-long initiative that introduces new features and content aimed at enhancing accessibility for users of all abilities. This celebration includes updates across various platforms including Fitness+, Apple Maps, and Apple Music, ensuring a more inclusive experience for everyone.

Enhanced Accessibility in Apple Stores

As part of its commitment to accessibility, Apple will launch SignTime, an on-demand sign language service, in Canada on May 19. This service allows Apple Support and Apple Store customers to communicate with an interpreter using American Sign Language (ASL). Currently, SignTime is available in the U.S. (ASL), the U.K. (British Sign Language), and France (French Sign Language).

This week, Apple Stores worldwide are also hosting live sessions to educate customers on utilizing accessibility features on their iPhones. Users can find this how-to content available on Apple Support’s social media channels as well.

New Shortcuts for Mac and Apple Watch

In addition, Apple is introducing an Accessibility Assistant shortcut in the Shortcuts app for both Mac and Apple Watch. This feature will recommend accessibility options tailored to the user’s preferences, making it easier for individuals to customize their experiences.

Fitness+ Workouts for Wheelchair Users

Apple Fitness+ is taking significant steps towards inclusivity. Trainer Bakari Williams is highlighting accessibility features such as Audio Hints—descriptive verbal cues designed for blind or low-vision users. The program will transform its Time to Walk episodes to “Time to Walk or Push” and its Time to Run episodes to “Time to Run or Push” to accommodate wheelchair users. Furthermore, all Fitness+ workouts and meditations will incorporate ASL, and videos will feature closed captioning in six languages, ensuring accessibility for all users.

Exploring Parks with Apple Maps

Apple Maps has unveiled a new guide titled Parks Access for All, aimed at helping users identify accessible features, programs, and services available in parks across the United States. This guide is a collaborative effort with Gallaudet University, an esteemed institution for Deaf, Deafblind, and hard of hearing students. Additionally, Apple Maps is spotlighting businesses that prioritize serving the Deaf community, a subject highlighted by Tim Cook during his recent commencement address at Gallaudet.

Sound-Focused Playlists on Apple Music

Apple Music is introducing “Saylist” playlists, which are curated collections centered around different sounds. While designed for individuals working on vocal sounds or speech therapy, these playlists are available for anyone to enjoy, enhancing the auditory experience for all users.

Additional Accessibility Features

Apple TV+ will showcase popular films and shows that feature characters with disabilities. The platform will also highlight collections of well-known actors from the accessibility community, including Marlee Matlin from CODA, Lauren Ridloff from Eternals, and Selma Blair from Introducing, Selma Blair. The App Store is focusing on accessibility-centric apps and developer stories, while Apple Books will feature narratives from individuals with disabilities. Additionally, Apple Podcasts will cover advancements in technology that promote greater accessibility.
