Intel announced on Tuesday its partnership with Elon Musk’s Terafab project, a significant semiconductor manufacturing complex located in Austin, Texas. This collaboration is a strategic alliance with Musk's key businesses, including Tesla, SpaceX, and the newly merged xAI.

The confirmation of this partnership was shared through a post on X, where Intel described its commitment to revolutionizing chip manufacturing. "Our ability to design, fabricate, and package ultra-high-performance chips at scale will help accelerate Terafab’s aim to produce 1 TW/year of compute to power future advances in AI and robotics," the company stated.

Initially unveiled in March, the Terafab project plans to produce a variety of chips intended for numerous applications, including autonomous vehicles, humanoid robots, and AI data centers, some of which may potentially operate in space.

Establishing a semiconductor factory—or a “fab”—is notoriously complex and costly, with expenses exceeding $20 billion and timelines extending over several years. By integrating Intel's expertise into the project, Musk is leveraging decades of manufacturing experience that his companies currently lack.

The Terafab initiative encompasses the construction of two specialized facilities in Austin. One facility will concentrate on chips for Tesla's autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots, while the other will be tailored for advanced AI data centers designed for use in space.

Intel’s CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, expressed optimism regarding this innovative approach to semiconductor manufacturing. In his post on X, he remarked, "Elon has a proven track record of reimagining entire industries. This is exactly what is needed in semiconductor manufacturing today. Terafab represents a step change in how silicon logic, memory, and packaging will get built in the future."

Intel's Strategic Move Amid Restructuring

This partnership marks a pivotal victory for Intel during a time of significant restructuring. The company has faced challenges in keeping up with competitors like Nvidia in the AI sector, making this alliance a potential turning point for investor confidence. Following the announcement, Intel’s stock surged by 4.2% during Tuesday trading, climbing to $52.91, as reported by Bloomberg.

Furthermore, this collaboration provides a crucial anchor customer for Intel Foundry, the company’s manufacturing division, which had reported an alarming operating loss of $10.32 billion in 2025, according to Reuters. With the U.S. government now acting as Intel's largest shareholder, the company faces mounting pressure to demonstrate that its new 18A manufacturing technology can compete effectively on a global scale.

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the Terafab project, several challenges lie ahead. Intel is already contending with delays in its own construction projects; for instance, its factory in Ohio has had its start date pushed back to 2031. Additionally, Musk has established a reputation for setting ambitious deadlines that frequently change.

However, the urgency for a reliable domestic supply of high-quality silicon is at an all-time high, especially with SpaceX recently filing for a confidential IPO and Tesla shifting its entire focus towards robotics.
